Gavin Newsom and CA politicians have called a costly special election on November 4 to redraw the state’s congressional maps at a cost to taxpayers of more than $200 million, even as California is facing a $20 billion budget deficit that cuts priorities like public safety and emergency response.

Prop 50 will put the politicians in the State Legislature in charge of those maps. Defeating Prop 50 would keep the current system approved by a citizens’ initiative that requires an independent redistricting commission to draw election districts in a strictly non-partisan manner.

Prop 50 takes the redistricting power away from citizens and gives that power back to the politicians so they can manipulate the lines of election districts for their own personal political benefit.

As proof of how corrupt Newsom and CA politicians are on this issue, Prop 50 has a FALSE TITLE – deceptively worded to suggest to voters that a YES vote would keep the independent citizens redistricting commission when in fact a YES vote eliminates the citizens from the process and hands the power back to the politicians.

While Newsom and CA Democrats say Prop 50 is a response to Trump and Texas redistricting, California shouldn’t retaliate and sacrifice its integrity by ending fair elections.

The truth is CA politicians have always opposed the independent citizens redistricting commission that was imposed on them in 2010. Now they are using hatred of Trump as the window dressing to fool voters into grabbing the power back from the people.

Join the fight to DEFEND FAIR ELECTIONS in California!

On November 4 – Vote NO on Prop 50!

Top 5 Reasons to Vote NO on Prop 50:

1. Allows Politicians to Seize Power from Citizens
Hands the power back to politicians to rig the system by drawing districts safe for their cronies and guaranteeing their re-election. That’s not democracy — that’s entrenchment.

2. Permits Corrupt Backroom Deals
Instead of a bipartisan group of citizens drawn from everyday Californians drawing the district lines over a year with public hearings and input, Sacramento politicians rushed Prop 50’s maps through the State Legislature in just one week, with new districts that only benefit their own careers.

3. Wastes $200 Million on a Costly Special Election
Spends $200 million on a costly special election while California is facing a $20 billion budget deficit that cuts priorities like public safety and emergency services.

4. Eliminates Fair and Competitive Districts
Allows gerrymandering, which disproportionately harms communities of color, reduces competitive elections, and erodes accountability. Strips constitutional protections that currently ensure communities are kept whole and that maps are not drawn to favor political parties or incumbents.

5. Not Temporary — it Will Be Permanent
Just like “temporary” taxes, fees and regulations, once politicians have power, they never give it back to the people. Letting Sacramento politicians “temporarily” kill off a piece of democracy sets a dangerous precedent that could be used by future politicians to undermine constitutional safeguards.

Answer to “What about Texas?”

Gerrymandering districts by politicians is NEVER ok – whether here, in Texas, or anywhere else. We believe Texas and all states should adopt California’s independent citizens’ redistricting model. While we might not like what Texas is doing, California shouldn’t retaliate and sacrifice its integrity. California must rise above partisan games and protect fair, competitive elections without resorting to gerrymandering.
